As part of the Funchal City Sessions programme, it is now the turn of the artist Francisco Pedro Oliveira to perform in Funchal for the first time. The concert will take place on 26 September at 9.30 pm at Galeria Tratuário.

A multidisciplinary artist originally from Santa Maria da Feira, Francisco Pedro Oliveira has lived and worked in Porto since 2015. He studied fine arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto, where he specialised in multimedia, with a particular focus on sound and interactive music. His artistic practice also extends to drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, sound and performance, seeking ways to bring together matter, memory and spirituality. His work often arises from encounters with objects, gestures, landscapes and archives, with particular attention to the ways in which ritual, technique and the imaginary remain inscribed in matter. He has exhibited his work in various venues, such as the Serralves Foundation, the Porto Municipal Gallery, the Semibreve Festival and the Vila Flor Cultural Centre. More recently, he has been represented by Mais Silva Gallery, with whom he took part in ARCO Lisboa 26.

Francisco Pedro Oliveira’s work is characterised by his exploration of sound, material and the imperfections of objects. In 2023, he released *Bolborinho* through the Fera Felina label, the result of an artistic residency carried out at the organ of Lamego Cathedral. The work was premiered at the Lamego Museum, at the invitation of ZigurFest, as a multi-channel sound installation.

In "Bolborinho", the organ, the wind and folk tradition are transformed into sonic material to address personal themes such as mourning, crisis, birth, renewal and the search for a reconnection with what is essential.

His musical journey began with an interest in the violin and dance, before he discovered the guitar. Together with Bernardo Costa, he founded Deepbreather, a project rooted in progressive rock and instrumental post-rock. In 2018, he released his first album as an independent musician, a work recorded on the piano at his grandmother’s house, in which he explored the instrument’s physical imperfections through electronic processes. The relationship between instruments, objects, matter and their imperfections has remained, ever since, a fundamental characteristic of his work.

Whilst in Porto, he founded Terebentina, an artistic collective influenced by German Expressionism and the American no wave movement. In 2019, he took part in the exhibition “Bergado & Terebentina” at the Vila Flor Cultural Centre, through “happenings” developed in collaboration with the other members of the collective. The end of Terebentina left a void linked to the experience of collective creation and artistic catharsis.

In 2021, following the end of Terebentina, Francisco Pedro Oliveira formed the Duo Amuleto Apotropaico with António Feiteira, Terebentina’s former drummer. The project seeks to transform music into a kind of cathartic ritual, exploring the contrast between tension and release through the guitar and drums. Inspired by popular mythology, the study of amulets and apotropaic practices, and spiritual jazz, Amuleto Apotropaico seeks to achieve a form of transcendence through the exploration of sound. The duo blends improvisation, texture, melody and electronic elements in a musical experience conceived as a ritual of transcendence.

It should be noted that APCA – the Agency for the Promotion of Atlantic Culture has announced the remainder of the Funchal City Sessions programme, with concerts taking place monthly in the city of Funchal. The Tratuário Gallery will continue to host the Funchal City Sessions concerts, followed by an after-session at the end of each concert.

The Conservatório - Escola das Artes da Madeira Eng. Luiz Peter Clode has also joined the project’s network of partners, hosting the training activities that characterise the Funchal City Sessions concept and fostering interaction between artists and students on vocational courses.
