Solar do Ribeirinho – Machico Museum Centre will host the exhibition Paisagens Insulares from 3 July to 28 August. The audiovisual exhibition brings together artists Carolina Bonzinho and Inês Costa, with the participation of Inês Malheiro.
Travelling from Porto towards the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, the artists retrace, almost a century later, the journey undertaken by Raúl Brandão during his voyage to the islands in 1924, which would eventually give rise to his book As Ilhas Desconhecidas (The Unknown Islands). Throughout their journey, the artists visited almost all of the islands, engaging with local communities, observing the landscapes and collecting images, sounds and testimonies that served as the basis for the works presented in the exhibition. The project is the result of a three-week artistic residency across the two Atlantic archipelagos.
Moving between documentary and fiction, Carolina Bonzinho and Inês Costa construct a possible portrait of these Atlantic territories through an audiovisual exhibition combining cut-outs, animation, photography and moving image. The islands emerge simultaneously as both setting and subject, revealed through real and imagined landscapes, authentic testimonies and fictional narratives.
Complementing this visual approach, Inês Malheiro explores the sonic dimension of the island landscape. Drawing on sounds recorded during the artistic residency and fragmented voices, her work creates a bridge between the different perspectives presented in the exhibition, evoking the territory, flora and traditions of the islands.
In her work, Carolina Bonzinho takes landscape, everyday life and people as her starting points. Through analogue portraits and still images, she simultaneously conveys the beauty and unease experienced by those who inhabit these territories, revealing the rhythms of everyday life and the striking presence of flora that accompanies the experience of living on a paradisiacal island.
In turn, Inês Costa develops a visual narrative that oscillates between documentary and fiction. Lost within images of nature, she imagines islands that know one another and poses a question to the visitor: “If the island could speak, what do you think it would say to you?”
Paisagens Insulares will open on 3 July at 6:00 pm at Solar do Ribeirinho – Machico Museum Centre.
