May 28, 2025

The 'City Sessions', originally conceived as an extension of the MADEIRADiG festival, organized by APCA - Atlantic Culture Promotion Agency, are back in Funchal, this time with a new identity.

The first edition of the "Funchal City Sessions" features trumpeter 'Hocus', João Almeida's stage name, and will take place on June 20th at Galeria Tratuário, following its usual format: a training activity followed by a concert.

'Hocus', an increasingly relevant figure on the experimental scene, will debut at the "Funchal City Sessions" at 9:30 pm, with the concert that will inaugurate the 2025 concert cycle.

Portuguese trumpeter, improviser and composer, 'Hocus' focuses on creating sound layers that freeze time, with impactful changes of scenery. In recent years, he has collaborated and shared the stage with some of the most important musicians in the national and international music scene, such as Nate Wooley, Peachfuzz, Ricardo Roscano, Garfo, Susana Santos Silva, among many others. He has performed at festivals and venues such as Teatro S. Luiz, Galeria Zé dos Bois, Casa da Música, Festival Robalo Antena 2, Cortona Jazz Festival, and has also toured Europe in numerous ways.

Before the concert, there will be a workshop led by the artist on the theme "Real-time sound processing". In this workshop, scheduled for 4 pm, the musician - with a background and tradition in jazz - will explore the trumpet in a different and innovative way. The session is aimed at students and lovers of jazz and experimental music, as well as anyone curious about sound art.

Entry is free for both activities!

As Funchal City Sessions são uma iniciativa da APCA - Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica, em parceria com o Colectivo Casa Amarela, e contam com o apoio da DG Artes - Direção-Geral das Artes / Ministério da Cultura.
