The exhibition Atlânticos - Media Arte will be on display in the Salão Nobre of Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias from 19 September to 8 October, thus opening its new season.
The exhibition brings together six artists from Madeira and the Azores, creating a space for artistic dialogue and reflection around the concepts of island and the unknown.
The initiative stems from the open call promoted by APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica, as part of the centenary celebrations of the publication of As Ilhas Desconhecidas (1926), by Raúl Brandão, a seminal work of Portuguese literature that offered new perspectives on island realities. Inspired by this legacy, artists from the two archipelagos were invited to submit projects in the fields of installation, film/video, photography, multimedia, sound, digital art and interactivity.
A total of six creators were selected — Ana Margarida Menezes, Anna Jiskrova, Catarina Fernandes, Flávio Nuno Joaquim, Paulo Freitas and Sara Brum Silva. During the month of June, each undertook an artistic residency in the archipelago opposite to their place of origin, experiencing new geographies and everyday realities that served as the basis for the development of the works now presented.
The result of this creative process is an unprecedented group exhibition, curated by Hugo Olim, bringing together multiple contemporary artistic languages. Drawing on digital technologies and multimedia, the works explore different ways of looking at insularity, the relationship with the sea, peripheries and the very concept of the unknown, encouraging reflection on contemporary Atlantic realities.
More than an aesthetic exercise, Atlânticos - Media Arte seeks to serve as a platform for encounters and exchange between artists, territories and audiences. The initiative not only brings the two archipelagos closer together, but also contributes to the creation of new artistic narratives that transcend physical and symbolic borders.
The initiative is organised by APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica, in co-production with ADCA – Agência para o Desenvolvimento da Cultura nos Açores and Funchal City Council, through Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, with the support of the Portuguese Republic – Culture / Directorate-General for the Arts.
With this exhibition, Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias reinforces its role as a key venue for the presentation and dissemination of contemporary art, opening a season that promises to broaden horizons and bring audiences closer to contemporary artistic practices.
