Funchal City Sessions continues its programme with Canadian Rifles, the stage name of Rui Pedro Andrade, who will perform as part of the 7th edition on 24 April.
Originally from Madeira and now based in Porto, his music is characterised by boundless sensitivity and an ability to convey delicate emotions through sound processes that are both opulent and subtle. Oscillating between densely textured electronics, seductive melodies and an ethereal sense of fatalism, his artistic axiom is that it is the music itself that bleeds, regardless of its form or format.
Founder of the label Eastern Nurserie, in 2020 he released The Snipe & The Clam, the first full-length collaboration between Burning Pyre and Canadian Rifles, a work that synthesises the shared sensibility and artistic vision of both artists. Taking a contemporary approach to ambient music, deeply shaped by a subtle romanticism, the album combines lush synthesiser melodies and harmonies with a dynamic and organic rhythmic foundation. A faithful reflection of the methods and modus operandi of the two artists, the opulent, shimmering drones unfold with a strong sense of narrative, giving the eight instrumental tracks a magical, almost watercolour-like atmosphere, where lightness enters into dialogue with the restraint of a disciplined pulse.
In 2024, he released If The Sea Would Ask Me, his second full-length album, continuing his exploration of minimalism as a central pillar of his musical language. Sustained by expansive nuances and slow, sumptuous melodies, the five compositions assert themselves with a presence that is at once monolithic and delicate. The work is one of remarkable restraint and almost sacred beauty, marked by themes of trauma and broken promises, and driven by an unanswered question: if the sea were to call, would it be possible to resist?

APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica has announced a new programme for Funchal City Sessions, with monthly concerts taking place throughout 2026 in the city of Funchal. Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, is part of the project’s partner network, hosting the training activities and fostering direct contact between artists and students enrolled in professional courses.
Originally conceived as an extension of the MADEIRADiG Festival, Funchal City Sessions focuses on engaging, educating and developing new audiences for Digital Arts. The initiative is promoted by APCA in partnership with Colectivo Casa Amarela and Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, with the sponsorship of Elby, Quinta Moscadinha and Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, and the support of the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth and Sport / Directorate-General for the Arts.
