Following the launch of Funchal City Sessions with artist Afonso Arrepia Ferreira, it is now Violeta Azevedo’s turn to take the stage at the 5th edition, taking place on 28 February at 9:30 pm at Galeria Tratuário.
Violeta Azevedo is a sound artist who moves between composition and improvisation with her transverse flute. Her music is created within a dense and detailed universe, where she transforms unique organisms through alchemical processes, drawing on an orchestra of electronics. Sound walls are built from distorted harmonies as well as delicate melodies, shaping a complex, living piece that invites us to immerse ourselves in a world inhabited at times by shimmering beings and at others by darker energies, yet always existing in symbiotic harmony.
In recent years, she has collaborated with a wide range of Portuguese musicians connected to the avant-garde, presenting her work at some of the country’s most significant experimental music venues, including Culturgest, MAAT and gnration. She is also involved in several musical projects, including Jasmim, haraem and Savage Ohms.
Taking the transverse flute as an unusual starting point for sound creation, she builds a complex orchestra of effects pedals through which she shapes and refines timbres, creating beautiful and abstract soundscapes that evoke different moments and languages within the ambient tradition.

APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica has announced a new programme for Funchal City Sessions, with monthly concerts taking place throughout 2026 in the city of Funchal. Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, is part of the project’s partner network, hosting the training activities and fostering direct contact between artists and students enrolled in professional courses.
Originally conceived as an extension of the MADEIRADiG Festival, Funchal City Sessions focuses on engaging, educating and developing new audiences for Digital Arts. The initiative is promoted by APCA in partnership with Colectivo Casa Amarela and Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, with the support of the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth and Sport / Directorate-General for the Arts.
