APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica will host the seminar As Ilhas Desconhecidas: 100 Years of Raúl Brandão on 5 September at Castanheiro Boutique Hotel. The event is organised in collaboration with the Regional Directorate for Culture of the Azores and the University of the Azores, through UAc.artes and CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, as well as the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive.

To mark the centenary of the publication of As Ilhas Desconhecidas (The Unknown Islands) by Raúl Brandão, the seminar will be moderated by Duarte Nuno Chaves and will feature contributions from Graça Alves, José Avelino Santos and Vasco Rosa. The speakers will reflect on Raúl Brandão’s time in the Azores, his perspective on the archipelago, and the continuing relevance of his work.

On the same day, the exhibition Raúl Brandão e os Açores: As Ilhas Desconhecidas (Raúl Brandão and the Azores: The Unknown Islands), produced by the Luís da Silva Ribeiro Public Library and Regional Archive, will open to the public. The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the Azores through Raúl Brandão’s distinctive perspective, whose writing remains one of the most significant literary testimonies of the archipelago.

The exhibition brings together documents, early editions, correspondence, photographs and other materials that shed light on the context of Raúl Brandão’s journey to the Azores and the creative process behind his work. At the same time, it highlights the importance of his legacy for understanding the islands’ identity and Portugal’s cultural history.

The seminar and exhibition opening will take place on 5 September, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Castanheiro Boutique Hotel.
