The film 'O Fauno' celebrates its 100th anniversary

On September 30, at 8:00 pm, the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater will host the silent film 'The Faun of the Mountains (1926)' directed by Madeiran filmmaker Manuel Luiz Vieira. The film presents in preview format a new original soundtrack, composed by Jorge Maggiore created specifically to accompany this work of Portuguese cinema.
Promoted by APCA - Agency for the Promotion of Atlantic Culture, in co-production with AFTM - Madeira Film, Television and Multimedia Association and the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, it is part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of 'The Faun of the Mountains', considered one of the pioneering works of Portuguese cinema and an important landmark of the national cinematographic heritage.
This project comprises eight sessions, which took place between August 2025 and June 2026, during which young people and children were challenged to reflect on themes such as autonomy, democracy and tolerance, through the exploration of the arts and audiovisual technologies, in a participatory and interdisciplinary learning process.
Shot in the Pearl of the Atlantic, this film is distinguished by the record of the landscapes and rural environments of the island, crossing nature, imagination and mythological elements in a narrative centered on the young 'Genny'. From his fanciful vision of the mountains, the figure of a mountain ranger is transformed into a mysterious faun, giving rise to a story marked by imagination and the relationship between the character and the Madeiran landscape.
A century after the making of the film, it returns to the public through a new artistic approach, which brings the cinematographic heritage closer to contemporary musical creation.
In its presentation, the original soundtrack will be synchronized with the most recent version of the film, in a work that seeks to establish a close dialogue with the cinematographic language of the Madeiran artist.
This project not only seeks to mark the 100th anniversary of 'The Faun of the Mountains', but also to value and preserve the legacy of Manuel Luiz Vieira and the history of cinema. The show thus proposes a new reading of the work that remains an important artistic and cultural testimony of the Region.
