Marie Dior at the 10th Edition of Funchal City Sessions

As part of the programme for the 10th edition of Funchal City Sessions, artist Marie Dior will perform in Funchal for the first time on 25 July at 9:30 pm at Galeria Tratuário.

Marie Dior, the stage name of Diana Correia, is one of the most distinctive artists in Portuguese electronic and experimental music. A composer and sound artist, she returns to Portugal after a decade in Berlin, where she developed an artistic practice centred on the exploration of the distortion of pure tones, transforming them into bodies and materials in a constant process of mutation and decay. Her work addresses questions of agency and mutability from a perspective she herself describes as transsexual and transgressive.

Her compositional language and sonic universe have established her as a prominent figure in the underground music scene. Initially associated with the microgenre witch house, she became part of an informal collective of artists connected to the scene in the early 2010s, later developing a broader approach spanning laid-back club music and experimental production.

On her latest album, Carrier with the Claw, released in late 2025 by AVNL Records, Marie Dior takes her exploration of microtonal tones further, transforming them into raw and emotionally intense songs. On this new release, her research takes on a darker, dreamlike and haunted character, conveying a feeling that is both intimate and unsettling.

​

Constantly evolving since 2004, her approach to composition and sound reaches a new turning point with this album. Building on the tensions and obsessions that shaped Fatal Push and My Crisis ... My Cigarette, the record delves deeper into unstable harmonies and heightened emotional intensity, tracing a fine line where melody dissolves into shadow.

Recorded in Berlin during the autumn and winter, Carrier with the Claw intertwines sampling, handcrafted digital processes, processed tones, corrosive distortions and disembodied voices into an immersive sonic narrative. Across nine tracks, the album maintains an atmosphere of pressure and unease, guided by images of nightmares, thresholds and figures suspended at the edge of perception.

APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica has announced the remaining programme for Funchal City Sessions, with concerts taking place monthly in the city of Funchal. Galeria Tratuário will continue to host the Funchal City Sessions concerts, followed by an after session at the end of each performance. Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, is also part of the project’s partner network, hosting the training activities and fostering direct contact between artists and students enrolled in professional courses.

Originally conceived as an extension of the MADEIRADiG Festival, Funchal City Sessions focuses on engaging, educating and developing new audiences for Digital Arts. The initiative is promoted by APCA in partnership with Colectivo Casa Amarela and Conservatório – Escola das Artes da Madeira, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode, with the sponsorship of Elby, Quinta Moscadinha and the Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, and the support of the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth and Sport / Directorate-General for the Arts.
