Originally conceived as MADEIRADiG CiTY SESSIONS, the project underwent a change of identity and became Funchal City Sessions following the festival’s hiatus. The 4th edition now features Afonso Arrepia Ferreira, taking place on 31 January at 9:30 pm at Galeria Tratuário.

His musical journey began at the piano, at the Bragança Conservatory, and eventually led him to Lisbon. Today, Afonso Arrepia Ferreira works as a composer, musician and producer, combining electronic music with an epic and orchestral pulse with the darker atmospheres of contemporary classical music. The result is an intense and contrasting sonic language that seeks a beauty that is at once fragile and overwhelming.

In Warm Winter, 2015, an EP released by Eastern Nurseries, the artist revisits his earliest recorded material, marking a decade of artistic development through nine tracks that reinterpret these initial compositions in a kind of cathartic return to the project’s origins.

Following Afonso Arrepia Ferreira’s concert, an after session will take place at Galeria Tratuário itself, extending the spirit of the gathering and celebrating music in a relaxed atmosphere.

Another new feature this year is the introduction of paid admission, meaning that tickets must be purchased to attend the concerts. Tickets are available through the Funchal City Sessions social media channels and via the corresponding Eventbrite link.

Tickets

  • General admission: €5

  • Students: €2 (with the FCSaluno discount code)

  • People aged 65 and over: €2 (with the FCS+65 discount code)

In addition to the concert, Afonso Arrepia Ferreira will lead the workshop Methods and Processes, taking place at Galeria Tratuário on 30 January at 6:00 pm. The workshop is aimed at audiences interested in contemporary composition processes and the intersections between electronic and classical music. During the session, the musician will present his compositional process, exploring the different layers that structure his sonic universe and the ways in which he transforms silence into tension and emotion into musical architecture.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge, subject to prior registration via the registration form.

Funchal City Sessions is an initiative of APCA – Agência de Promoção da Cultura Atlântica, in partnership with Colectivo Casa Amarela, with the support of the Portuguese Republic – Culture / Directorate-General for the Arts.
