Transdisciplinary artist Pandelis Diamantides presents the audiovisual performance Mαλμός – Pulse on 17 September at 7:00 pm at the John dos Passos Cultural Centre, as part of TRANSGRESSION art + technology LAPP 3 – Live Audiovisual Performance Programme.

The presentation offers audiences in Madeira a unique opportunity to experience a work that brings together sound art, moving image, biological data and digital technology, exploring the heart as a metaphor for emotion and vibration as a connecting element between the physical, biological and social dimensions.

Mαλμός – Pulse, a word meaning “pulse” or “heartbeat”, is a series of generative audiovisual works developed by Pandelis Diamantides. The work draws on data related to cardiac activity, breathing and movement to determine the parameters of software specifically developed for artistic creation. The result is an audiovisual experience in which sound and image evolve in response to manifestations of the body and human behaviour.

The project also emerged from the artist’s experience during the periods of isolation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. By regularly monitoring his own heartbeat and breathing rhythm, Diamantides sought to establish a relationship between his personal pulse and the pulse of the outside world, finding in this observation a way to maintain a sense of connection and continuity during lockdown.

The new Mαλμός collection, subsequently released on the Sedition platform, uses data collected from the artist’s own heartbeat and breathing rhythm. More than a technological exploration, the work invites reflection on what is shared across human experience: the body, emotion, movement, and the relationship between the individual and the community.

Born in Athens, Pandelis Diamantides is an electronic music composer, interdisciplinary artist and researcher. His practice operates at the intersection of sound, moving image and digital technology, giving rise to immersive installations, audiovisual environments, sound compositions and performances involving expanded media.

His work has been presented internationally at major museums, institutions and festivals, including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, MoMA PS1, MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, EYE Filmmuseum and Ars Electronica Garden, as well as festivals such as SXSW, Art Rotterdam, i Light Singapore and the Athens Digital Arts Festival.

His selected works include Go Back to Hiding in the Shadows (2019), Quickly Photographed and Released Unharmed (2020), Mαλμός – Pulse (2023) and Ground Studies for Pilots (2025). He also develops international collaborative projects in the fields of digital art, sound and technology, including Mutual Wave Machine, TOPIA, Drowing and Bluets.

The performance is suitable for audiences aged 14 and over. Tickets are now available via Eventbrite for €10.

The presentation is part of TRANSGRESSION art + technology LAPP 3 (Live Audiovisual Performance Programme), a programme dedicated to contemporary audiovisual performance that fosters encounters between art, technology and digital experimentation. Throughout the 2025–2026 edition, the project brings together national and international artists whose practices explore the languages of sound art, moving image and new media.

The project is promoted by APCA – Agency for the Promotion of Atlantic Culture, with curation and artistic direction by Hernando Urrutia. It is supported by the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture – Regional Directorate for Culture, through the John dos Passos Cultural Centre, as well as by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth and Sport / Directorate-General for the Arts.
